Whether you already know that you have a high level of cholesterol or your doctor has told you that you do, you need to learn about the factors that can lower and raise your cholesterol levels so you can begin eating more balanced meals.

One of the first things you need to do is to find out exactly what your cholesterol level is by having your doctor perform a blood chemistry analysis test. Sometimes the doctor will have the laboratory close by and you can obtain your results on the same visit. But often times, you will need to reschedule another consultation with your doctor as he will have to wait for the laboratory to deliver the results.

Maintaining a high level of cholesterol for a long period of time can lead to some major health problems. One of these problems is that it can start to shut down some vital organs which will affect your overall health. Another problem is that it can lead to your death. This is why many people emphasize just how important it is to go on a diet to lower cholesterol along with a daily exercise routine.

Fundamentals to Lower Cholesterol

When you start on your diet to lower cholesterol, you need to be aware of some food items that you need to eliminate from your daily meals. The three main items that you need to take out are salt, unnecessary carbohydrates, and fatty foods. There are several other food items to get rid of, but those three are the main ones you need to concentrate on when you are just starting out.

Another thing you need to do is start increasing the foods that can lower your cholesterol into your daily diet. These foods are vegetables, fruits, brown rice, beans, whole grains, and foods high in fiber. These foods all contain the good cholesterol which helps your body expel all the bad cholesterol from your body.

Foods that lead to a high level of cholesterol, which is bad cholesterol, are foods that are high in fat and oils. In order to continue to have a proper balance in your body, you will need to eat foods that are high in good cholesterol because they help lower the bad cholesterol levels.

As with most diets, you will not see any instant results because the change from a high level of cholesterol to a low level of cholesterol will be very gradual. This diet will also be promoting a healthier lifestyle because you will be avoiding major health complications that can arise due to a high level of cholesterol. Just take into account that you need get rid of fatty foods and salt and start eating more foods high in fiber.
