Acomplia the popular weight loss drug which was highlighted by the FDA in 2007 and reported on this blog again in 2008 was finally withdrawn by the EU almost 12 months after it was rejected in the US.
The EMEA (The European equivalent of the FDA for pharmaceuticals) has suspended Acomplia due to the risk of serious psychiatric disorders following a number of reported suicides being linked to the anti-obesity drug. The anti-obesity drug had been advocated by many to be the answer to obesity for millions but this initial enthusiam was quickly dampened by the FDA findings in June 2007 and never got the expected approval.
Although approved in the EU (which now leaves a huge question mark over their reasons for approval even though rejected by the FDA) sales have now completly stopped on both sides of the Atlantic and it looks like anti obesity market is still looking for a quick fix cure.
