Menopause Weight gain what can you do about it?

June 8, 2008 by Tanya · Leave a Comment

Menopause weight gain is one of those stages in life that that most women dread. This is because weight gain during menopause not only shows that you are infact aging but also means that you cannot really keep control the dramatic changes that your body will go through in the coming years and months.

But, there is no reason to fell depressed as you start to gain weight during menopause because this does not mean that they you are not going to be able to help yourself in someway. You should recognise that your body will not work the same  as it did a few years ago. You should accept that this weight gain caused by menopause is really pretty much inevitable.

Once you are resigned to this fact, you’ll find it much easier to stop being depressed and start looking for ways that you can use to minimize and control your weight.

Most experts say that weight gain is one of the common problems faced by women in their 40s and 50s. Most of the complaints about weight gain relate to the seemingly “uncontrollable” bulges in the hips, thighs and abdomen which can be unsightly when seen in clothes they were once happy to wear but no longer feel comfortable in.

Although there is nothing much that can be done once weight gain in during the menopausal stage of a womans life has commenced, there are very definately things that can be done to minimize and totally prevent it while you are younger.

What causes weight gain menopause?

To be able to avoid experiencing excess weight gain caused by menopause, one of the things that younger women should do is to understand what the reasons behind this what appears out of control weight gain at menopause.

Once you understand these causes, they you can do something about it especially if you are prepared in advance.

The following are just some of the most common reasons that lead to weight gain. Younger women should aware of these causes so they can plan some ways to avoid gaining weight too much at the menopausal stage of life.

1. Lack of exercise or reduced levels of exercise.

This is the considered as the number one reason why more and more women experience menopause weight gain. Studies indicate that as women age, they tend to move slower and are less energised. This leads to them accumulating fats in specific areas of their bodies.

To avoid menopausal weight gain, younger women or even those who perimenopausal (approaching menopause) can start increasing their physical activities by having regular daily exercise and a workout that is specially designed for them and within their physical capabilities (suited to their age and level of fitness).

2. Increased food intake. This is another major reason why women gain too much weight during their menopausal stage. Experts say that as women grow older, their appetite increases which leads to the accumulation of too many calories which later on turn to fat since they are utilised as they are by younger women who are more active.

3. Inability to burn as many calories.

Some studies suggest that this is also a significant factor that contributes to menopause weight gain since the body replaces this excess fat with calories more easily which are subsequently harder to burn off. Once the muscle growth slows in the body and is replaced with fat, the bodies metabolism will be slowed as a result which will lead to even more deposits of fats in the body.

It is also suggested by doctors and researchers that women who have menopause weight gain in their family histories are more prone to this condition.

To avoid suffering from the concerns over menopausal weight gain  it is best to start to include more healthy foods in the diet, take regular physical exercise and visit the doctor once in a while for a general check up on your health

Are You Too Feeling Stressed To Look After Your Health

March 4, 2008 by Tanya · Leave a Comment

When traumatic events such as war or natural disasters are covered in the news, their after-effects and stress they put on people are often discussed at length. In fact, research has shown that stress and trauma exert both short and long-term stress on the body.

While trauma and accidents can indeed be more serious in their effects on health and psychology than everyday stressors such as financial worries, long-term low level stress is claimed to also hurt your health considerably.

With the finances of so many suffering after the holiday the cost of heating our homes takes a record price hike all of these just add to the day to day stresses everyone faces.

But what exactly what effect does stress have on your body? Fair question and according to The National Center for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder states that effects of trauma can include anxiety, nightmares, fear, increased arousal, grief, and re-enactment of the event. War veterans experience symptoms like depression and fatigue. So spare a thought for our boys coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Pfizer for Women center online reports these symptoms “when stress reaches an unhealthy level”: anger,
anxiety, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, depression, and helplessness. When stress builds up it can also influence your
behavior and daily life any of those symptoms cound familure?

Some people notice also the desire to sleep more, eat unhealthy food, or smoke, and may find themselves lacking focus at work. Some of these symptoms feature almost daily in some peoples lives maybe yours?

Stress can also cause excessive worry about events out of your control the best way to deal with these sort of situations is to just accept them and move on. I know probably easier said than done.

When stress continues for the long-term, it can over time contribute to clinical depression, burnout, and sleep
problems. Physical aches in the body are also common, as well as ulcers but internal and external

So what can you do if you experience stress for more than a few days? There are different possibilities depending on the
kind of stress and your resources. For everyone, exercise is a key remedy for any stressors. Eating well and drinking enough water, while obvious, are habits so many of us forget. Getting enough sunlight is important, especially for people prone to depression.

If the stress is caused by some factors that can be addressed and solved in your life, seek out counseling or advice from
someone you trust. Sometimes just vocalizing what you are feeling and experiencing lifts part of the burden off your
shoulders. Everyone handles stress differently, but to ignore it completely and not release it in some way can be very
unhealthy. Some people release stress by activity such as exercise, hobbies, cooking, and so forth-basically anything
enjoyable and constructive.

Something important to keep in mind is to accept that stress effects are not your fault or cause for blame. When stress is present in your life, consider ways to deal with it or lessen its effects. Stress can never be eliminated completely, but
how we handle it makes a big difference in how we feel. Don’t feel you need to juggle every life stress on your own.
