A brilliant white smile can only be shown if you keep your mouth, teeth and gums in top order.

I have worked very hard to get my teeth back to the way they looked in my teens, before the caffeine staining took a hold!

So what can you do to keep, or to get your beautiful teeth back?

Well the first thing is an obvious one:

- Brush regularly, at least twice a day and if possible, after every meal. Do not brush too hard and for too long, this can actually do more harm than good. Use an electric toothbrush with a timer on it, so that you know when you have brushed for long enough. This is my toothbrush, I swear by it! The Oral B 7550 Professional Care Power Toothbrush

- Use Dental floss or tape. it is estimated that only 22% of the population floss or tape properly on a daily basis. Brushing is good and we all must do it, but flossing gets inbetween the teeth, into the places where the brush can’t reach. So, go buy some tape and start today!

- Visit your dentist twice a year, remember, prevention is always better than cure. If you visit your dentist regularly, they have more chance of picking up any potential problems sooner, therefore curing any major problems before they start.

- Diet. Yep, that again, if you do not eat healthily and correctly, you are always going to suffer from teeth and gum problems. Many people think that if they reduce their sugar intake, that they will automatically have better teeth. Not in all cases, the real trick here, is to reduce the amount of times you intake sugar, not the amount of sugar you consume overall.

- If you drink caffeine, alcohol or you smoke, cut down as a minimum, but if you can, stop altogether, all are bad for the condition and look of your teeth and gums, let alone your general health.

- You could use a mouthwash, but remember on the main, their purpose is to freshen breath, not prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

If all of the above points are followed, you will have a better than average chance of having good healthy teeth and gums.

But so what if I don’t clean my teeth, what will happen?

The first thing that is likely to happen is that your teeth will have a build up of plaque on them, plaque is formed from the sugary, starchy foods that we eat. If the plaque is not cleaned from your teeth on a regular basis, the acid in it eats in to the enamel protecting your teeth and if it is allowed to build up over time, then this when tooth decay and gum disease take hold and cause terrible oral problems, not to mention huge dentistry bills!

What about toothpaste? What type should I use? How much should I put on my brush?

I have some quite strong views on the type of toothpaste you should use, You can read about them, with some very infomative links here at The Dangers Of Flouride.

Thanks for reading and Keep Smiling :>)
