Came across this article and thought it addressed some of the reasons for joining a gym not sure I am in total agreement with them all so read my further comments after the article and see if we agree. Come on this really is something worth talking about.
Any way here goes the article…
Many people are undecided in joining a gym. Most of them do not have spare time or budget for extra expenses such as membership fee. Then there are people who are already keeping good healthy diet and exercise, so joining a gym is not an option worth consideration.
Yet, if you believe you can’t maintain a good exercise routine and diet for yourself, it highly commended that you join a gym. Below are some reasons you can consider when deciding to join a gym.
1. In the gym you will meet people with the same goals as yours, like losing or gaining weight, building muscles, wanting to get fit, etc. Being part of an environment with common goals, you become more moved in achieving for those goals and so you will execute your exercise routine regularly.
2. You can access the required equipments for your exercise in gym. If you are exercising at home, your equipment is limited often by space and budget. Thus, the type of exercise you can perform is also limited. It will cost you a lot of money if you tend to purchase all equipments necessary for your exercise. In gym, there are already available equipments like free weights, cables, machines, etc. that you can use.
3. In gym, there are professional people like personal trainers available if you want to ask questions about the right way of exercising. You can also ask them to demonstrate a certain workout using specific equipment.
4. You can learn other exercises by seeing other people exercising. By seeing these people, you can learn tips on how to execute the routine properly. You can also see if it is manageable by you or better not try it.
5. Going to a gym can make you formulate a routine. When you go to a gym, it is unquestionably you execute your exercise routine. Unlike when you are at home, you can do other things instead of exercising.
6. You can concentrate on your workout in gym. When you are at home, there are other things to manage. If there is a visitor, you just can’t leave him alone and perform your workout. It is also impossible not to react if your children invade your routine.

I am quite please this article does put gym membership in maybe an overly postive light. My proviso’s are that select a gym carefully and if possible ask for a months trial free or otherwise before joining.
Secondly although it seems a good idea ( and is definitely cheaper) don’t join a gym for a year. The most anyone should join a gym first time round in my view is 6 months. Life is ever changing and twice I have joined gyms then moved or the gym has put in other facilities making parking impossible.
But more important when choosing a gym choose one that specifically caters for people like you if it’s full of athletic types (and you aren’t) you’ll uncomfortable likewise a gym full of body building men is not really going to be best environment for a mom of two children.
If you see women looking like they are ready for the catwalk rather than the rowing machine chances are it’s not right either. What type of gym do you prefer and why?
