Suzanne Somers is already the author of 15 top selling books so when I was handed a copy of her latest ‘Eight Steps To Wellness’ I was anticipating a pretty good read. Lets start of with one thing this is not a weight loss per se but it it is more about wanting to live healthily to a ripe old age.

So accept my apologies for this being included on our diet blog but it did make a interesting read and should appeal to those women over 40 especially and give those under some serious food for thought.

For those of you who have never read a Suzanne Somers book such as the best selling Ageless you’ll find this is a bit space age medicine and beyond the pocket of most people but if you follow some of the ideas I don’t think you’ll feel the book is a waste of time.

Much of what Somers talks about is what her team of doctors have discovered about hormone imbalances in our bodies and how these are trigger such events as the perimenopause and even cancers . They also are attributable for depression, anxiety, fatigue,lack of sex drive, sleepless nights, and ultimately in some cases illness, and even it is claimed sometimes even terminal illness.

Some of these imbalances are caused by the natural process of aging while others are linked to lifestyle, environmental effects and dietary habits. Which means we are affected both ways from which Somers states many of our illnesses and general lack of wellness stem.

Breakthrough explores cutting-edge science and delivers smart, proactive advice on the newest treatments for breakthrough health and longevity some of which are affordable to us all others of which are beyond most pockets.

I found this book well written with a good clear plan for healthier living and extended life. It includes things like eating healthy (organic when it is available) foods, avoiding when ever possible pharmaceuticals (except for pain management , treating infection, and control of mental illness or if absolutely necessary,) and avoiding toxins and pollutants in the home and environment.

She also recommends the use and application of what she describes as “breakthrough medicine”–Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy: “the way to remain youthful, healthy and energetic.”

The book covers the basic 8 steps each with a chapter of their own interspersed with interviews with Doctors on the subject matter being discussed. The eight steps are …

The 8 Steps:

* Get BHRT
* Avoid chemicals and detoxify your body
* Take nutrition seriously
* Care for your GI tract
* Avoid pharmaceuticals unless absolutely necessary
* Supplement your diet
* Exercise regularly
* Get proper sleep

Now this book won’t appeal to everyone and to some will seem very over the top in it’s thinking. I know a few women who use BHRT (bio hormone replacement therapy) to good effect (so they say?) but some of the suggestions such as IV Chelation, Stem Cell preservation and Human Growth Hormone will be ‘too of the wall’ to be considered and not to mention too costly to most women.

In conclusion this book is worth reading but to many it will be something they see is for celebritites, health freaks and the filthy rich and will be regarded more for it’s entertainment value rather than practical advice for most American women.
