Deep brain surgery or deep brain stimulation is the newest in the ever increasing number of surgical options being considered for those who have tried everything else including obvious things like dieting, and even bariatric surgery to reduce obesity.
Surely this has got to be the most radical treatment yet for obesity but for one woman Carole Poe this was not not only ground breaking but potentially life saving. Carol has become the second person to recieve this surgery in the US where electricity is introduced in to the brain in specific areas (in this case the parts of the brain which control hunger and contentment).
Deep brain stimulation has already been used before in the treatment of neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy and also for eliminating or reducing the tremors and ticks.Leading brain surgeons believe this technique is effective at treating a whole range of problems and are now considering using this method in extreme cases of obesity where everything else has failed.
The expert neurosurgeons at West Virginia University Hospital have been given the green light by the Food and Drug Administration to carry out studies in to the effectiveness of deep brain stimuli for treating obesity.
Dr. Julian Bailes, chairman of West Virginia University’s department of neurosurgery a spokes person for the hospital made clear that this was not a method being considered for all patients and that it was strictly for seriously obese patients but with now around two-thirds of Americans overweight more radical methods are being considered to control the decline of the nations health and obesity related illness.
Personally it would take a lot for me to let someone tinker with my brain after all it’s what makes me who I am but I guess if you a desperate enough then it could be worth looking into if it becomes more widely available.
In the meantime just stick to diet and exercise as I doubt the cost will be covered by mst people’s pockets or medical insurance but lets hope like so many things it doesn’t become abused and only available to the rich and famous.
