Healthy fat isn’t that something of an anomaly every one bangs on about fat being bad for you and here’s me talking about healthy fat.

Well never one to avoid controvesy let me explain exactly what I am talking about regarding healthy fats and what makes some fats specially healthy.

Unless you’ve been stuck on a desert island for the last 20 years I am guessing you know that saturated fat (that from animals) can lead to increased cholesterol and ultimately clogged up arteries and all that brings.

But probably not quite as widely publicized is the effects of those ‘good fats’ which can help the body burn fat, strengthen muscles, improve your mood and boost your energy they can also strengthen your joints and improve your good looks

It strikes me as somewhat strange these wonderful substances get nowhere near as much publicity as their unhealthy cousins. Maybe it’s just we prefer bad news to good or is there something more sinister going on here?

A majority of diet plans seem to totally forget about these good fats but I have to ask why since these good fats in the diet can help significantly in helping get rid of fat and with the extra energy they provide make the required exercise to burn off excess pounds so much easier to deal with.

I can come up with at least half a dozen reasons why you shouldn’t exclude fat totally from your diet one key one being your body needs at least 10% of it’s calories from fat to avoid malfunction and going into fat storing mode or starvation mode which is something we spoke about in an earlier post

Additionally having fat in your diet slows down the absorption rate of food which prevents those dangerous sugar spikes these can lead to a rapid increase in weight, and a constant craving for food.

I said that it should be primarily saturated fats you avoid but even then there are a few exceptions few people tell you about these are the small amounts of naturally occuring fats found in eggs, and some red meats When it comes to unsaturated fats looks for those which contain high levels of EFA’s (Essential Fatty Acids).

Many people lack enough EFA’s in their diet and the body needs an adequate supply of these for several reasons they help the bodies repair mechanisms, reduce aging and improve the ability to control insulin thus preventing diabetes and helping the metabolic system operate at maximum effectiveness
