Heart rate monitors are in my view almost as essential as a pair of trainers to any one serious about exercise.

Are you are one of those people that is totally committed to your personal exercise routine?  Or even if you are a person that enjoys working out occasionally in an effort to stay strong, fit and healthy, or possibly you exercise to lose weight?

Infact whichever type of exercise you are doing and for what ever reason, you really should really be using a heart rate monitor to monitor your progress.

Let me explain myself more fully

The simple fact is that the harder you exercise, the more benefit you gain from your workouts. Of course also, the harder you workout, the faster your heart beats.

That is where a good deal of the benefit of exercise comes from…

When you work your heart properly it makes it work better and makes it and you healthier. The potential problem you have is that you don’t know how hard your heart is working and you need to know this information to make your workouts fully effective.

Not only do you want your heart rate to increase as you workout to achieve maximum benefits from the type of exercise, but you do not want to over work your heart either.

This is where a heart rate monitor comes in very handy.

As you become fitter, the heart needs to work less to move the blood around your body which of course is a good thing. Most fitness trainers and health experts would tell you “Effective aerobic conditioning requires that you maintain your heart rate at the proper intensity level for at least 20 minutes per workout”.

However, if your heart rate is too high, your exercise can become counter effective and even detrimental. If you are unwell or feel unwell you should stop exercise immediately.  For beginners, it is important not to push too hard and to build up the intensity of the work out over time.

You should be looking to make sure your heart beat does not exceed the ideal beneficial upper limit of more than 85% more than what your normal heart rate would be at rest.

Using a heart rate monitor will let you know exactly the speed at which your heart is pumping the blood around your body (how fast your heart is beating in other words).

If the heart rate monitor shows you that your heart is not pumping fast enough, you can increase the intesity of your workout.  If the heart rate monitor says you are working too hard, you can slow down a little keeping your hard rate between those limits we discussed earlier.

Most commonly used heart rate monitors attach to your wrist, a bit like a wrist watch and have a digital readout that makes it easy to use and monitor your heart rate whilst exercising with out having to stop. These units use a small digital watch type battery to power them.

Some of the better models can also give you a variety of other information other than just your heart rate depending on the type and model that you purchase.

Some of the models might be too sophisticated for basic needs and you should look at the reasons you will be using a heart rate monitor before making a purchase as features and prices vary considerably and there is no point in paying for features you are unlikely to want.

Are you likely to be a basic user, planning for an ordinary routine of workouts at the gym or home exercise routines?  You might be interested in weight loss and may want a heart rate monitor that can also monitor calorie burn, this feature might be very useful and help you keep on track.

If you are in to Athletics or a complete fitness fanatic might want a model that includes a stopwatch and other similar features such as a GPS so you always know where you are.(not that you’ll need a GPS if you always exercise in the same gym) : > ). If you are swimmer you might want a divers style monitor.

Whatever kind of exercise training you are interested in, there is a heart rate monitor designed just for your needs out there infact the choices can some times be a bit overwhelming.
