As you know by know I have opinions on silver bullet cures for weight loss and obesity one of these being Hoodia or to give it it’s full name Hoodia Gordinii but what the heck is hoodia anyway that makes the claims of it being so effective.

Now that’s a fair question and I think I can best answer it by suggesting we take a look at Wikipedia to get a totally unbiased view of things…

So this is what Wikipedia says

They are stem succulents, described as “cactiform” because of their remarkable similarity to the unrelated cactus family. They can reach up to 1m high and have large flowers, often with flesh colour and strong smell.

Many Hoodia species are protected plants, typical of the Namib Desert, ranging from Central Namibia to southern Angola, especially in plains and rocky areas. Common names include “Bushman’s Hat” and “Queen of the Namib”.

Several species are grown as garden plants, and one species, Hoodia gordonii, is being investigated for use as an appetite suppressant.

It is not uncommon for people to ask about whether Hoodia works. This is almost certainly because Hoodia pills have become a popular alternative to diet programs and other products many of which don’t work.

But my friend is it true that Hoodia really is effective at controlling weight? More importantly if it does work how does Hoodia do this?

Hoodia the Evidence laid bare

Hoodia it is almost certain in it’s raw form does have some effect on the appetite of the person eating this can be effectively demonstrated by teh fact that native bushmen have used this as an appetite suppresant when out hunting for centuries.

It enabled those out hunting to survive with less food and have more stamina.

But how does Hoodia do this?

As I said it acts as an appetite supressant which stops you feeling hungry and therefore you don’t feel the need to eat so often and thus you lose weight … simple really? The hoodia contains a chemical called P57 which acts on the brain telling it,that it is full and this stops the craving for food.

So if it is that effective you might be thinking why all the controvesy…

Well therein lies the problem it seems that some the effect is not the same on everyone and like every drug we all benefit or not in some cases at different rates. But one of the big positives of Hoodia generally is it has only limited side effects and they are fairly minimal and it does not lead to bowel control probelms like many so called ‘diet pills’.

So you are probably thinking what’s my hang up if it is that effective why don’t I recommend Hoodia to my clients as an aid to weight loss. Well the problem is like everything this cactus Hoodia is found in a remote area of Southern Africa but of course enterprising enterpreneurs decided that was too expensive to harvest effectively and started cultivating it instead in more hospitable areas.

Yes this means more Hoodia is available but the strength and effectiveness of the product is much less than the original plant eaten by the bushmen. Add to this that only a small amount of Hoodia is used in most weight loss pills and you might see the problem more clearly.

It’s simple really it’s like claiming that all diamonds are worth a fortune based on the Koinor or some crazy statement like that.

I have spoken to several manafacturers of Hoodia in an attempt to get an unbiased answer and they themesleves admit that Hoodia today is not as effective as that first used and some believe Hoodia will be useless within a matter of months and worse and a couple of years at best.

Of course even assuming you find a reliable supplier weight loss results will vary hugely and the added ingredients put with the Hoodia could work with against the Hoodia for certain people. It is for this reason I don’t recommend Hoodia or products with Hoodia but I will continue to report on any latest findings and continue my own quest for an effective and consistent appetite suppressant which I feel is probably the only effective non exercise and diet related option if indeed such a product exists.
