The idea of detoxing your body is one that everyone should consider at some point. If you are overweight then you should consider a detox very seriously, as it has been proven to help clear the body of some unnecessary extra weight.

But a problem that many people detoxing come across, is often that your normal suppressed cravings come to the fore. Because you are not eating your ‘normal’ diet, your body starts to crave it’s normal foods that it is used to.

Once you get a couple days into your full body detox, the cravings may not be the only ‘change’ you feel, you may start experiencing severe mood swings, headaches, stomach aches, feeling faint or other symptoms that make you want to give up, in some severe case you may even suffer pain or hallucinations.

However, if you can stick with it and see it through, once you pass out the other side of these cravings and changes, the body’s readjustments will make you feel better than you ever thought was possible.

When an addict tries to kick a habit, it is known as going Cold Turkey which is a combination of vomiting, cold sweats etc.. you are unlikley to experience these sort of symptoms but you can expect hunger pangs, irritability and even things like bowel irregularites for a few days.

So just how can you battle the cravings that you are experiencing during your detox?

I have listed for you some steps you can take to help you beat the cravings that you might experience while going through a detox especially if this is the first detox you have ever done.

1.    Avoid places that have the thing you crave. If you love burgers and fries don’t go down town or the mall for few days.

2.    Avoid watching television shows or reading books and magazines that have the foods you are craving. Not a good idea to watch a cookery program as this will just make the hunger pangs worse.

3.    Drink a lot of water and fruit juice (if your detox program allows the juice). Make sure you keep well hydrated at all times as this will help flush out the body quicker.

4.    Call a supportive friend if you feel urges coming on strong. Make sure they won’t give in to you to keep the friendship which is very easy to do if they see you are desperate.

5.    Write in a journal or diary. This is an excellent idea as it will force you to evaluate what you are doing before doing it record every meal in your journal before eating it.

6.    Find a new hobby or past time to help ease the cravings. If you were a smoker for example find something to occupy your hands and keep busy for a few days.

7.    Go exercise or go for a walk or jog when your cravings come on strong. This might also make you feel more hungry but just live with it for as long as you are going through the detox process.

8.    Practice breathing exercises. Controlled breathing and yoga are great for relaxation and if you are more relaxed you are at little risk of relapse or quitting your detox will be much lower.

These are not a cure-all for the problem of cravings but they are great strategies to try while you are on a detox program.

You need to keep in mind that there will be cravings and that there will be side effects which make your cravings even worse but if you plough through it and stick with the plan, the side effects and the cravings will both pass in a few days at the very worse.

Hang on in there you can do it..

You should think of it in the same way as someone who is quitting smoking or drugs or alcohol.

Their body’s might actually make them feel sick when they first quit as they have that dependency still. However, as they adjust to it, the body will be much healthier without the drug than it was before.

Getting past the detox and into that new point is always the hardest but it is well worth it when you get there.

I seem to have painted quite a grave picture here but I have been honest with you, detoxifying is not an easy thing to do but if you can stick with it and see it through, the benefits will far outweigh all of the potential side effects.
