Low Thyroid which sometimes is referred to as a is the subject of the question I recieved today from  Darlene from Melbourne Australia

Darlene says…

“I have been doing the tips you suggested and do not need to lose a lot of weight but I found out about a month ago that I have a . I am trying like crazy to lose the weight but thus far I have not been able to lose any. I have been reading that with a low thyroid, that it is very difficult to lose weight.”

Thank you for a great question Darlene. (low thyroid) is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce adequate amounts of thyroid hormone, with a variety of consequences:

If you have fatigue, weight gain, low motivation, heat or cold intolerance, headaches and migraines, dry skin and hair, irritability, anxiety and panic attacks, hair loss, fluid retention, depression, decreased memory and concentration..

Brittle nails, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, low sex drive, insomnia, hives, asthma, allergies, slow healing, acne, or carpal tunnel syndrome, you may have a thyroid disorder.

If you do have a thyroid disorder the longer you leave it untreated, the harder it is to respond to the treatment when you do receive it. It is therefore vital to get a proper diagnosis.

I presume Darlene that you have received a and that you are following a prescribed treatment program? You should therefore ask the medical people whom are helping you for advice concerning your weight issue.

You might also check out a a book called ‘Thyroid Diet‘ by Mary J Shomon. The book discusses (I quote):

“Optimal dietary changes, including how a thyroid sufferer should focus on a , high-fiber, lower-calorie diet, optimal timing of meals for maximum hormonal impact, thyroid-damaging foods to avoid, helpful herbs and supplements, and more.”

“The book contains several different eating plans, food lists, and a set of delicious and healthy gourmet recipes. With handy worksheets to use in weight loss tracking, and a special resource section featuring websites, books, and support groups, you’ll find vital help for the millions of thyroid patients dealing with weight problems” (end quote).

I should point out that I have not read the book, neither am I endorsing it. However, check it out by all means and if you do decide to buy it I would be interested to hear how you get on.

Have a great day…
