The number of women having liopsuction is almost at a record high across America which can hardly be shocking as women see this as a quick and easy way to lose those pounds without having to go on a diet.
In the United Kingdom the amount of liposuction procedures almost doubled year on year to nearly 4000 and the story is pretty much the same in other countries and especially in the US.
But this is set to continue with the latest beauty trend being the ‘lunch time lipo’ or to give it’s correct name laser liposuction which is expected to be taken up by celebrites in the US as has been the case in The UK and across Europe where the procedure began around 3 years ago.
The FDA have currently approved 15 clinics across America to carry out this procedure but the amount is expected to grow as demand increases.
But contrary to popular opinion it’s not a short cut to losing weight as it simply removes unwanted body fat in a specific area of the body to change your body shape.
Liposuction is not a treatment to make you slim as it is for people who are near or at their ideal weight who want to get rid of fat in a particular area of the body when diet and exercise have not made any difference.
This is probably one of the main attractions to the celebrity crowd as it help maintain that perfect body image (at least on a full clothed body)
The absolute maximum any one should expect to lose by liposuction is around 10-14 pounds which is hardly what you imagine when you watch these operations being performed on all the body makeover programs on TV these days.
Lipsuction is now a safe medical procedure when done in an approved way and is only use for moderate levels of fat removal.
At one time it was thought acceptable to remove as much as 25-30 pints of fat which equates to around 30-40 pounds in weight the accepted maximum is now more like a third of that figure. This often lead to serious complications in the past and in some cases the risk of dying of shock.
The most common places to have liposuction done are the stomach, hips, thighs and buttocks and there are 3 main types of liposuction.
1. Traditional Liposuction(-Tumescent Liposuction) This method involves the surgeon making small incision in the skin they then insert a small hollow tube to break down the fat cells. The fat cells are then sucked out using a vaccum pump.
This will normally involve an overnight stay at least in hospital and you will need to wear elastic strapping for about 7-10 days.
Recovery in full from this type of traditional liposuction may take a couple of weeks but the swelling can take several months to go down so the effects will be hidden for a while.
Generally if you have good skin which has good elasticity the skin will shrink back as the operation heals and the swelling subsides.
This is major surgical procedure which has all the associated risks of surgery it will leave a lot of bruising and will be painful when healing. It will also leave a small scar up to an inch long and if you have to much fat removed can leave ugly loose fold of skin.
On occasions although thankfully rarely the area may be permanently numbed if nerve endings are damaged.
2.Laser Liposuction (or the ‘luchtime lipo’) :- Thi is a new technique which is superquick hence often refered to as the ‘lunchtime lipo’ as it can be performed under local anaesthetic in les than an hour. It’s much gentler and less radical than a traditional liposcution procedure.
A fibre-optic laser is inserted through a tiny incision in the skin which liquifies the fat underneath. Unlike the traditional liposcution where the liquid is removed by sucking it out the laser lipo allows the fat to be excreted as waste.
This techique originated in Italy known as Smart Lipo and can be used anywhere tradional liposuction would work but is particularly good for smaller areas such as a double chin or breaking up cellulite.
Their will be much less bruising and swelling but as the body takes a while to excrete fat it could be as much as 6 months before the results are noticeable.
3.Ultrasonic Liposuction (Ultrasonically Assisted Lipoplasty) - This is similar to traditional liposuction and is the best way to remove firm areas of unwanted fat or remove a volume of excess fat.
UAL (Ultrasonically Assited Lipoplasty) uses high frequency sound waves to liquefy fat cells and facilitatewhich can then be drained using a tube. The ultrasonic energy acts primarily on the fat cells and has no effect on the vascular, nervous, or connective tissues.UAL allows the surgeon to achieve smoother results, remove difficult fibrous fatty deposits and drain of fat than traditional liposuction.
The most frequent areas treated by UAL in men are the love handles, breasts, abdomen and neckline. In women they include: thighs, hips, buttocks, stomach, knees, lower leg, cheeks and double chins. Some women elect to have their fat recycled to other parts of their body using lipo-augmentation. Most likely one procedure will be sufficient. However, some patients require a fine tuning procedure at a future date.
