On May 22nd 2007 the new birth control pill Lybrel was finally given approval which could be the first contraceptive drug to give women freedom from periods for good.
Gee wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could be free of periods for good unless we wanted to have babies?
You could go out when you wanted with out having to worry about carrying sanitary protection or being worried about showing through light colored clothing. No more suffering cramps, tender breast and all other manner of things we have to endure every month.
The now approved Lybrel (manfactured by Wyeth) is the first pill designed to stop menstruation like several other combination birth control pills it contains a low dose mixture od synthetic oestrogen and progesterone. But unlike pills you take daily (with a gap during your period) you take this pill every single day so it becomes part of your life style plus because you have no breaks you have no periods.
This product has been extensively tested by both the manufacturer and the FDA to ensure it is safe for continual usage. There are currently other pills available such as Yaz and Loestrin 24 which reduce periods to around 3 days and Seasonique a newer version of Seasonale which reduces the number of periods to four a year. Not to forget the hormone injection Depo Provera. So although breaking new ground not exactly the massive break through we might have thought it was.
In the clinical trials carried out in the US and Canada the Lybrel product (also know as Anya) was found to have a a 98% success rate as a birth control pill.
Almost an additional bonus if you like is by stopping periods it reduces problems related to hormone imbalances such as PMS, menstrual headaches, mood swings and increased appetite.
Like almost all contraceptive pills containing oestrogen , Lybrel does give you an increased risk of blood clots and breast cancer especially if you are the wrong side of 35 and a smoker. Apparently some women have found when changing pills they experience an adjustment period where bleeding may be heavier for a few months but this according to those asked settles down quite quickly.
Only time will tell if Lybrel is the answer to women finally taking control of their bodies and gaining freedom from periods for good. They will be available to buy from early July.
Do not consider taking any different from of contraceptive pill until you have had a thorough medical and consultation with your medical practitioner or obstetrician.
