Labelled the “Obesity and Soda Tax” it seems NY Governor David Paterson’s tax on soda pop has been given a big fat NO WAY from consumers.
The tax proposes that in the State of New York there is an 18% tax on drinks made with sugar.
It now seems however that Gov Paterson’s is now almost alone in his attempt to fight obesity and the financial crises at the same time.
One of his supporters is Professor Kelly Brownell (internationally renowned expert on obesity and weight control and Director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale) has said that he is disappointed in the lack of public support for the proposal.
He believes it is a very clever and effective way of raising much needed tax revenue and combating the obesity problem faced by Americans today in a single action.
He has estimated that the proposed 18% tax would reduce the current average consumption of sugared beverages which currently stands at 41 gallons per year per person by around 14%.
Plus there would of course be a massive benefit to public health longer term.
He also states that to reduce consumption of potentially harmful soda’s by this amount by public education alone would require millions of tax payers dollars soemthing the shaky economy can ill afford at the moment.
However it seems the vast majority of New York feel that being punished for consuming non-diet drinks is just to much and have given the idea a thumbs down.
As some one not from New York I can’t see this as a huge deal either way. In the United Kingdom where I am currently living soft drinks (sodas) are currently subject to taxation of 17.5% and it doesn’t seem to have encouraged anyone to stop drinking their soda’s here.
If people can be encouraged by stealth to quit eating and drinking harmful foods and the government can raise revenue is that such a bad thing?
