It seems that according to a recent article in Women’s Health magazine that Omega 3 fatty acids may actually act as an appetite suppresants.
Scientific researchers in Spain discovered that eating plenty of Omega 3 found in fish like Salmon, Tuna and even the humble Sardine all of which are packed full of super healthy Omega 3 fatty acids may reduce our hunger than many other foods.
The Spanish study involved people who were already over weight adding more fish oil supplements to their diets and as a result a large majority said they felt fuller and satisfied more quickly.
The researcher involved 232 overweight and obese volunteers, and each werre given a diet to follow on a completly random basis.
All participants were put on a low-calorie diet, supplemented with either a low dosage (260 mg per day) or high dosage (1300 mg per day) of omega-3s for eight weeks.
It was found that those who had the least Omega 3 were on the whole much more hungry than those who were given higher dosage levels of Omega 3.
This and other data led the Spanish team to conclude that eating foods high in Omega 3 would be a highly effective food to combine in any healthy living and dieting plan. Not just because of its high natural levels of Omega 3 ( a natural appetite supressant) but also it’s high levels of Vitamin D which helps boost the metabolism and preserve muscle.
The Women’s Health article also cited a study carried out and published in the American Journal Of Clinical Nutrition. In which it claimed
“Combining regular exercise with fish-oil supplements increases the activity of your fat-burning enzymes”
This study found that when test subjects took six grams of fish oil daily and worked out three times a week. After 12 weeks, they’d lost an average of 3.4 pounds, while those who exercised exclusively saw minimal shrinkage.
So it would seem if you needed more reasons to eat fish as part of your healthy eating plan you have them.
