Pedometers are a cost effective and simple way of getting fit whilst having fun with the kids, your partner or even your girl friends.I strongly recommend a pedometer as a way of walking to fitness and weight loss and if used the right way they can be really good fun. But your probably thinking what is a pedometer right?
A pedometer senses your body motion and counts your footsteps one by one. This count is converted into measurable distance by knowing the length of a typical step you use when walking.
Wearing a pedometer and recording your daily steps and distance is a great way of feeling you are getting some where and with simple math you can calculate how far you travelled. One thing I have used a pedometer with some of my clients and friends was to have a competition as to who walks the furthest in a day at work.
This can be a great fun way of getting exercise try having a contest with your girl friends at work or the moms collecting their children from school, a You can wear a pedometer all day, every day and record total steps. Or you can wear it just when you go out for a walking workout.
Multi-function Pedometers
You will find some of the more sophisticated Multi-function Pedometers which cost a few extra bucks provide additional facilities which provide additional information these include such features as measuring the amount of calories your burn, clocks, timers and stop watches, speed estimators, 7 day memory, heart beat (pulse counters).
Simple Step Counting Pedometers
The simplest pedometers only count your steps and display steps and/or distance. This is all you need to track to keep yourself motivated and to have competitions with your friends and family which I found is great fun. Set a goal of distance or steps for each day and a award the winner a non food treat.
The recommended number of steps is 6000 for health, 10,000 for weight loss when you count all steps during the day. For weight loss, an uninterrupted walk each day of 4000-6000 steps is recommended and should take around 30-50 minutes a day of constant walking or thereabouts.
Pedometer Accuracy
The latest generation of pedometers uses turned pendulum technology, accelerometers, and/or electronics to count your steps. The unit should be accurate in its count when you wear it correctly - you may have to experiment with where to wear as I found out when mine was moving when I sat typing at the computer. (NO CHEATING!)
How to Wear Your Pedometer
A pedometer should be comfortable to wear all day and be held securely by its clip, an extra safety leash is almost required. The display should be easy to read without removing the unit from your waistband. It should be protected so that bumps don’t punch a button and reset the count. It should easy and intuitive to move between functions.
Pedometer Walking Programs
Keeping records of your steps and/or distance can keep you on track. You can record your daily totals in any log, or get your pedometer and log through one of the pedometer walking programs offered.
The Lose 10 Pounds in 2 Weeks Program and The Dreambody Program’s both have the facilities to record your pedometer readings. I have included some of the top pedometers for you which I highly recommend as pedometers are a great way of walking to fitness and weight loss.
