Skin cancer has now become known as disease of the sun worshiper and these days skin cancer receives more publicity both by the media and the health industry than ever before. Does this mean therefore mean that skin cancer is on the increase or is it just that we are becoming more aware of the consequences of to much sun or over doing the sun bed tanning?
Possibly it’s a little of both but it seems at last people are starting to listen to the advice being given out. Now I don’t want to be a kill joy I love sun bathing as much as the next person but we must not ignore the warnings like so many already diagnosed with skin cancers are now learning. Previously either through ignorance or choosing to ignore advice they have now found out to their ultimate peril.
Today we are all well aware that skin cancer is caused by over exposure to sunlight which will come as a serious shock to those sun worshippers have travelled world wide in search of a perfect tan for many years. Many people are finally starting to take seriously the warnings that have been given out for a number of years and the allure of baking in the sun has started to be overtaken by health concerns at the risk of getting skin cancer.
In certain part of the world especially those who choose vacation to the tropics where the sun tends to be stronger locals and visitors are at least starting to cover up and avoid excess exposure to the sun. They have started using higher protection sun screens factor 30+ rather than the largely ineffectual factor 4-8 and they have also begun wearing protective eyewear, hats and shirts and tops on the beaches and around the pool.
The bottom line is now it seems doubtless that over exposure to sunlight for an extended period of time will lead to a serious possibility of contracting skin cancer. The amount or degree as to what contitutes over exposure to the sun is very much down to skin type.
People that burn easily often those with blond or red hair and fair skin are at the greatest risk from the sun and getting skin cancer. This is sort of how nature see’s it as those with fair skin are more susceptible to sun burn and it this painful affliction makes the body recognise it’s own vulnerability.
Sadly all to often people continue to ignore the obvious warning signs and continue to lie in the sun even when badly burned and suffering. It sounds almost unbelievable but all to often true.
Those who have fair skin have less of the chemical known as melanin in their skin where as those with darker skin have more. Melanin is found in everyone and is in the eyes, hair and skin and is responsible for pigmentation so as stated those with lighter skin have less melanin and subsequently less natural protection from the sun.
There is a relatively rare condition called albinism where the person has no melanin what so ever these people will have no color to the skin almost white hair and pink eyes and are called Albino’s.
What melanin does is it acts as a filter from the sun and reduces the risk of skin cancer by making the skin more resistant to the sun harmful UV rays. When you think about it is logical the majority of people who come from hotter climates where the sun is more intense have darker skin.
Sadly another common cause of skin cancer is totally self inflicted and this is the use over use of sun beds and the use of UV (ultra violet). People who use sun beds tend to ignore the warnings which are now prevalent on sun beds and in the past no such warnings existed. But like those who would worship the sun inspite of painful sunburn those who sun beds at home especially seem happy to ignore the risks of skin cancer.
My hope for all readers of the Dreambody blog is that you do get the dreambody you want by losing weight and toning etc but please please heed the warning with regards to sun exposure and skin cancer and don’t tan yourself in to a early grave.
