Recently in a episode of the popular TV show the ‘F Word’ featuring celebrity out spoken Chef Gordon Ramsey it was revealed that drinking smoothies can actually make you fat and that the levels of sugar in a smoothie can in fact be higher than many popular soda drinks.
This may shock some of you but when you think about it not really consider a typical smoothie which may contain several pieces of fruit (berries, banana’s etc) which are then blended in blender to provide a tasty drink pack full of vitamins and nutrition.
But what many people forget is that smoothies are packed full of fruit which is packed full of sugar … (well not sugar you put in your tea of coffee ) but fruit sugar or fructose. Whilst we are all encourgaged to eat 5 fruit and vegetable portions as part of a healthy diet what is forgotten is the levels of sugar in fresh fruit and even in some vegetables.
Getting the balance right is difficult between healthy eating and taking in to much sugar and it has also been suggested that eating omuch fruit can lead to diabetes which leaves us in some what of a quandry doesn’t it?
My advice is to cut out the smoothies and stick to the fruit as the fibre in the whole fruit helps balance things better nutritionally. But if you can’t do without your daily smoothie fix buy some mineral water and dilute at say 1/3 fruit smoothie and 2/3 water or sparkling water. Not only is this more refreshing but you’ll have cut your sugar (fructose) intake dramatically.
