According to the latest report released a few days ago there may be a reason teenagers eat more burgers and fries than fruits and vegetables: their parents.
The study recently completed at UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, found that adolescents are more likely to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day if their parents do.
However teens whose parents eat fast food or drink soda are more likely to do the same.
The study discovered that every day, more than 2 million California adolescents (62 percent of the population) drink soda and 1.4 million (43%) eat fast food, but on a rather disturbing note only 38 percent eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables.
Let us not ignore the fact this in a State where fresh fruit and vegetables can be found in abundance.
The chief cause of the lack of healthy foods in many teen diets has been put down to the high concentration of fast food restaurants in certain cities and low-income neighborhoods especially there are also and other environmental factors.
What strangely the report seems to ignore is that these same parents cooked healthy food for their children then the fast food restaurants would either have to change their food or go out of business.
So what is the practical solution stop giving planning permission to further openings of fast food establishments in poorer neighbourhoods or maybe make it compulsory for them to offer healthy food options at very least.
Well it’s certainly one answer but not one likely to win many supporters and after all stocking a few salads is hardly going to change eating habits overnight is it.
But with almost one-third (30 percent) of California’s teenagers either overweight or obese something has to be done and NOW. If you think this picture is bad in California it’s even worse in some other States.
Did you know that nearly half of adolescents (48 percent) whose parents drink soda every day also eat fast food at least once a day, while only 39 percent of teens whose parents do not drink soda eat fast food at least once daily.
Why should that be shocking I don’t know?
After all many soda’s are sold in fast food restaurants usually on an fountain where if your kids can and usually do choose to drink sugar packed soda’s until they burst for a couple of bucks.
Lets face it…
If you gave the average kid anywhere a choice of bottle of water or a highly flavored carbonated sweet drink very few kids would pick water.
You can’t blame your kids for making the wrong choices but you can you their parents.
Doesn’t this mean measures must be taken and FAST against the fast food industry and soda manafacturers before it’s too late.
Surely parents need to be made aware if they aren’t already that these companies are making a profit at the expense of your childrens health.
Do nothing isn’t an option by doing so, you are choosing to slowly kill your own kids. Yes it’s frightening but sadly very true…
In some communities medical practitioners genuinely believe that the life expectancy of the next generation of young people may be significantly reduced because of their eating habits.
Is that the legacy you want for your own children.
Don’t our kids have enough to contend with drugs and gun crime on our streets without having to worry that even their eating habits are likely to leave them with major health problems such as diabetes, kidney and liver problems and heart disease in adulthood.
One way to improve things is by educating parents about their current unhealthy food choices, as well as how to plan and prepare healthier options, this has been shown to in reducing teen obesity where it has been trialed although not unexpectedly everyone is keen to listen.
More controversially changes to employment policies that promote a better work-life balance for families could be an option. Given a more flexible schedule, more families might have time to prepare food at home and engage more often in family meals — an activity that has been linked to healthier lifestyles.
Whether this would actually work is however some what doubtful as the latest generation of children have become so used to eating off their laps while watching TV.
Did you knowless than one in 6 households even own a table. The next step is up to you leading by example is great start.
